A little about the craft, This is a star held as a Ukraninan tradition by singers celebrating New Years. They will sing in their neighbourhoods, spreading good cheer and frivolity. I happen to have wheat, so have made a nod to a Ukranian traditional and natural material used for festivities between Christmas and New Year. But in all honesty anything goes. An embroidery hoop was used as it aesthetically worked , but a paper plate can be used instaed. No need to make a hole. Just sellotape the starw star that you make to the rear. Decaorate your plate first.

This star is for decorative purposes only. I would like to make it useful for the parade so I will sure it up by bracing the star with more straws, long sticks or dowels ( in truth with whatever I have in the house ready for the Wassail). The star will then be stick to the top of a broom stick so that the Wassail singers can hold it aloft.

I hope you enjoy making this star as much as I have. Wishing you all a peaceful and healthy 2023. Thoughts especially go to everyone caught in conflict.
